Nutrition Reminders for the Holidays

As we head into the holiday season, here are a few nutrition reminders to consider.

Fuel your body throughout the day

Since our bodies are constantly using energy to function (yes, even if we are sitting all day!), it’s important to fuel it consistently with enough energy and nutrients. That means eating enough food throughout the day, and eating a balance of carbohydrates, fat, and protein. Without proper fuel, our bodies cannot function optimally, and we won’t have reliable hunger cues.

We also don’t have to “save up” or skip meals in preparation for holiday dinners. In fact, restriction often leads to overeating and being hyper-focused on food rather than enjoying time with family and friends. Remembering to eat throughout the day can prevent this!

We eat for many reasons, not just nutrition

Yes, it is important to nourish our bodies with nutrient-dense foods. However, we don’t just eat food for nutrients. We also eat for enjoyment and connection. Food is social and an integral part of culture and family traditions, and that should be celebrated!

Holidays are a time for celebration, not guilt or shame

It’s normal to sometimes overeat (or rather, eat past fullness). There’s no need to feel guilt or shame for overeating, and it does not mean you should skip meals or restrict your food intake the next day. Your body is smart and knows how to handle a little extra food every now and then.

The holidays are a time for celebration, eating guilt-free, being present with family and friends, and enjoying traditional foods. This holiday season (and all year long!), focus on eating foods that nourish your body, bring you joy, and satisfy your cravings.
